DailyKos and the tradition of fictional instructions for President Obama
Time to go nuclear over Obamacare—here’s one thing the White House must do - DailyKos Sun Sep 08, 2013 at 03:00 PM PD
What must the White House do? Go nuclear like Fukashima, spilling millions of gallons of nuclear waste into the Pacific? Blow up Nagasaki? I can hardly wait to learn what instructions the Progressive Savants at DailyKos have for the poor inept schmucks in the White House who must anxiously refresh their browsers waiting for these strategic clarifications.
Well? What they should do this time is take “the advice Chicago beat cop Jimmy Malone gave to federal Treasury officer Eliot Ness in The Untouchables”. This advice, and it’s not the 5 or even 100th time DailyKos has shared this tender nugget of wisdom with the White House always reminds me of Saul Alinsky who said:
Forget all that Eliot Ness shit; the only real opposition to the mob came from other gangsters, like Bugs Moran or Roger Touhy. The Federal Government could try to nail ‘em on an occasional income tax rap, but inside Chicago they couldn’t touch their power. Capone was the establishment.
Sadly, it turns out that the Untouchables was not a documentary. It was something called fiction - just like WestWing, American President, and that stupid movie about a Cuban invasion the wingers always fantasize about. The accountants got Capone, not the rough tough dudes who fired off their prop guns wildly. I like fiction too, but Sean Connery is an actor, he was not providing rules for politics or even policing - he was trying to be dramatically compelling, not accurate.
I have an idea: if you want to find examples of shockingly effective real politics, forget that Eliot Ness shit and study the most successful US politicians of the last 20 years. This guy Barack Obama, for example.
